Twomey Company  03/27/17 12:29:45 PM

Twomey Company was founded by V. T. Twomey in 1945 when he purchased a small wood frame elevator from Davis Grain Company. It had a storage capacity of 45,000 bushels. In 1954 the first grain storage warehouse was built with a capacity of 65,000 bushels. In 1956 the wood framed elevator and office were destroyed by fire and were replaced by a concrete elevator holding 180,000 bushels.

In 1961 V. T. Twomey died and his children continued the business. The company has since grown from a single location in Smithshire with storage capacity of 600,000 bushels in 1961 to seven grain handling and storage locations with a total capacity of approximately 50,000,000 bushels.

In 1972 a barge loading facility was added at the Mississippi River west of Gladstone in Henderson County giving Twomey Company the ability to ship grain by barge. The headquarters for Twomey Company has remained in Smithshire where the Company was founded.

Twomey Company operated seven grain elevators located at Smithshire, Larchland, Yorkwood, Media, Suez Twp, Gladstone Bluff, and Twomey Landing (River) in IL to serve the marketing, drying and storage needs of our customer. The company operated a fluid suspension fertilizer plant, provides custom spraying, crop scouting, and crop imputs. Twomey Company was also a Wyffels Hybrids seed corn dealer and a Stine seed bean dealer.

The Company was a member of the National Grain and Feed Association, Illinois Grain and Feed Accociation, Grain Elevator and Processing Society, Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, and the Ag Retailers Association.

All of the Twomey Company assets were acquired in November of 2011 by Consolidated Grain and Barge(CGB). CGB owns and operates the grain and fertilizer businesses and we also continue to sell Wyffels seed.
